George Boole’s Journey from the Boy of a Shoemaker to One of the Most Renowned English Mathematician

George Boole

George Boole was born in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England on 2 November 1815. He was a self-taught mathematician, logician, and philosopher. He was the son of the son of John Boole and Mary Ann Joyce. He belonged to the family of the shoemaker. He had a primary school education and later on his father taught him, as they couldn’t afford formal education due to the loss in the business. He spent most of his life teaching mathematics.

At Queen’s College, He worked as a professor of mathematics. From the age of 16, He started earning for his family by teaching in Heigham’s School He worked in the mathematical area of algebraic logic and differential equations.

In February 1840, His paper, “Researches in the theory of analytical transformations” was printed in the Cambridge Mathematical Journal.

In 1844 He won the first gold prize by Royal Society for the research papers he has written in mathematics.

In 1855, He was rewarded by the Royal Society of Edinburgh with the Keith Medal.

In 1857, He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS). From the University of Oxford and the University of Dublin, he received degrees of LL.D.

In 1841, He published a research paper on invariant theory and even released a book called On A General Method of Analysis. From the Royal Society, he received a medal in the same year for these works.

He is also the author of The Laws of Thought which he has published in the year 1854. In this book, he mentions about Boolean algebra.

In 1847 Boole published The Mathematical Analysis of Logic, the first of his works on symbolic logic.

In 1855 Boole married Mary Everest

In late November 1864, Boole while to his going to Lichfield Cottage from his home he got drenched in heavy rain. As he got drenched in rain, he falls sick and got pneumonia. Her wife wrapped him in wet blankets because of which his health got much worse. on 8 December 1864, he kicked the bucket.
